One out of three cancers is under the category of skin cancers, and the most common culprit is the sun, which is why it is important to protect your skin from the sun. This is especially true for your face, as the skin in that area is thinner and softer than other areas of your body. Here, we list down 3 main ways to ensure adequate protection of your skin from the sun.

Use Sunscreen, Even When Cloudy

Most people assume that cloudy weather will not transmit UV rays to your skin. However, this is the opposite of true. UV Rays can penetrate through the clouds, therefore, unless you will be positioned somewhere with coverage from the sun, wearing sunscreen is beneficial to your skin. Even when the sun is strongest at mid-day, you can still get sunburn in the evening. Make sure to select a sunscreen with good SPF, the recommended amount is SPF 50 at least. This is due to the thinning of our ozone layer.

Make sure to apply at least 1 ounce of sunscreen for the whole body. Don’t forget to apply to the tops of your feet, your neck, your ears, and the top of your head.

Wear Protective Clothing

We are all chasing that tan, glowing skin that can easily be obtained by sunbathing under the sun. However, dermatologists suggest not to go over the 20-minute mark when sunbathing, in order to prevent too much sunburn. A good thing to remember is to always bring extra clothing to cover your sunburn after the sunbathing session. One of the most common mistakes is for people to wear very open clothes to sunbathe, but did not cover their bodies after the session is over. Hence, it prolongs their sunbathing session significantly, which does not help your skin.

Cover Your Eyes

Similar to our skin, the four main parts of the eyes, which are the lens, retina, pupil, and cornea, are highly sensitive to UV rays. Especially if you reside near a body of water, UV rays from the sun may reflect from the water and add to your exposure. Another benefit of sunglasses is that they protect the delicate skin around the eyes from aging. This is important because eyelid skin is the thinnest skin on our body and is at the highest risk of sun damage.

When choosing sunglasses, the key features below are important:

  • 100% UV protection
  • A wraparound style to cover all sides of your eyes
  • Polarisation, which can reduce glare
  • Tinting
